Sport of the Month London Hampstead Heath
About Hampstead Heath
Hampstead Heath is an open space in North West London that is a popular place for people to go to participate in sport. There are around 16 different sports that take place in Hampstead Heath, with arguably the most popular being cross-country running. There have been some recent refurbishments to the park including a re-laid 400 metre athletics track, a new pétanque pitch, a new croquet lawn and new volleyball facilities.
Parliament Hill is a good place to see the city with views of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Canary Wharf Tower and much more. It is a good spot for flying a kite or just having a picnic and enjoying the view of the city.
Hampstead Heath is also well-known for its ponds. Many of the ponds allow fishing and some allow open water swimming. The Heath is internationally known for its open water swimming. The Men’s Pond and the Ladies’ Pond are the only life-guarded open-water swimming facilities open to the public every day of the year in the UK.
There are charges to use the athletics track, bowls, croquet, cricket pitch, football and rugby pitches, baseball/softball pitches, golf, petanque rink, putting green, rounders pitch, swimming, tennis courts and volleyball pitches. To see the full list of fees, go to the Hampstead Heath page on the City of London website.
